3V Drive Voltage
Matches coin-cell and low-voltage battery rails directly -- the natural choice for compact, battery-powered devices.
What It Is
A 3V-rated segmented LCD is designed to be driven directly from a 3V supply -- typically a CR2032 or similar coin cell, or two AA/AAA cells -- without a voltage-boost circuit in between.
How It Works
The LCD's contrast and switching threshold are set during manufacturing to match a 3V RMS drive waveform. Driving it directly from a matching 3V rail keeps the driving circuit as simple as possible -- often just a microcontroller's own LCD driver peripheral or a small dedicated LCD driver IC -- with no need for a separate voltage regulator dedicated to the display.
Pros
- Drives directly from common 3V coin-cell and battery packs -- no boost converter needed
- Simplest, lowest-component-count driving circuit
- Lower power draw than boosting to a higher drive voltage
Cons
- Contrast can be marginally lower than an equivalent 5V panel in some constructions
- Less headroom if the supply voltage sags as a battery discharges
Best For
Coin-cell and low-voltage battery products -- remote controls, small handheld instruments, wearables -- where keeping the driving circuit simple matters.
